Hi, I'm David!
I retired to Portugal two years ago, at 35. I now spend my time pursuing my passion project: building a winery and polyculture food forest from scratch.
My background is in the wine industry, but I have 8 years of teaching experience and began tutoring when I was in high school. I enjoy working with ESL students and helping them pursue their passions. As such, I teach much more than advanced English speaking and writing skills. I help students with high school, AP, and college coursework in the areas of English, Literature, Economics, History, Biology, and Chemistry.
I have worked in more than a dozen countries and love to help my students apply to schools, immigrate, invest, and start businesses around the world.
I like to think of myself as more than just a teacher. Instead, my focus is on improving your quality of life and ensuring that you achieve your long-term goals. As such, I don't simply teach English, AP coursework, and test-taking skills, instead, I help my students with every facet of their life, from immigration to school admissions, and starting up businesses.
Since I have lived, worked, and started companies in more than a dozen countries, I have used my knowledge and experience to help my students immigrate around the world to places such as Europe, Australia, the US, Canada, Thailand, and the Philippines.
My university-level students have been accepted to such prestigious schools as Harvard, Stanford, Yale, USC, UCLA, UC Davis, Oxford, Cambridge, McGill, Dalhousie, and UBC. My high school-level students have been accepted to Phillips Exeter, Choate Rosemary, Hotchkiss, Middlesex, Deerfield, Concord, Princeton International, Groton, and Trinity. American English
I am a native English speaker who was born in Canada and raised in the US, so I can happily switch between both accents and know all the differences in spelling, pronunciation, units of measurement, and vocabulary. Heck, I even know the difference between American and International marine navigation standards!
British English
I have played British characters on stage and have taken lessons on several different regional accents. I can happily teach you the subtle differences between the Queen's English, cockney, a Manchester accent, a Welsh accent, etc.
English for kids
I love working with kids who are at a more advanced level. They are probably my favorite students to work with. If your child is already speaking well, I am happy to accelerate their learning through fun, engaging lessons that include things like solving mysteries, reading/discussing classic, age-appropriate books, etc. I have a huge library of PDF material.
