Old Timer with NEW Tricks !

38 Years Teaching !

My name is Stephanie W.. I am a native English speaker from the United States. I have 34 years of experience teaching English in a local community college in Chicago. Now I live in New Mexico .and I still love this job! I have taught students from around the world, young and old, and every level of ESL from beginner to advanced. In addition, I have taught specialized classes such as High School Equivalency Diploma Preparation (GED), Citizenship test prep, TOEFL Test Preparation, College Entrance Writing, and Reading Comprehension Assessment Test Practice and Workplace English.

Many Diplomas !

I have a Bachelor's diploma in English from the University of Iowa with a focus on creative writing, as well as a Level 5 certified TEFL/TESOL teacher. In 2008, I was awarded Teacher of the Year and was chosen to make the graduation ceremony speech at our college. I believe that this recognition was due to my student-centered and Direct Method techniques that have made my classes effective, creative and meaningful. All Materials Are Possible

We can choose to use a textbook, story, job application, work document , or video and together follow along over a series of classes that build on each other. By surprise, one of my specialties is teaching students how to write an essay quickly for timed tests. Of course, I can provide other materials, homework, and progress tests that better fit your specific goal.

I now have over one year experience teaching children online with an intensive Chinese company.

I am excited to take on teaching online as my main focus. I have been lucky to have traveled in Asia, Europe, and Latin America. I am ready to do even more traveling in the coming years where I hope to improve my Spanish and also my printmaking art skills. All of these things add up to a great choice to work together. My classes focus on grammar, conversational fluency, reading, writing, listening, in a way that connects the separate sections to a larger theme or goal. Conversational English
The best way to improve in this area is to practice. In addition, however, we can video our conversations and together analyze some of the grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary issues that we want to strengthen. And yes, we can enjoy looking at the latest slang words too.
Business English
I have taught English in a number of workplace locations. We developed vocabulary and curriculum specifically targeted to the needs of that environment. I have experience working with retail, office and industrial settings that will help us make a plan.
English for work
I have worked with workers and employers to create a curriculum that targets communication and vocabulary development.
English for beginners
Isn't it a surprise that even a level one class can happen all in English? It can! Get ready for a lot of hand gestures and picture dictionaries, but you will be surprised how fast you will be speaking full sentences in English in our time together.
American English
In addition to teaching English in the US for 34 years, American English is my native language. I would be happy to focus on American idioms, slang, accents or cultural studies.
Intensive English
Many of my classes in Chicago have been for 6 to 16 hours of class time together with the same group of students each week. I would be honored to work with a student who would like to focus intensively over a number of weeks or months on making breakthroughs in their English. I will run that marathon with you!
English for kids
I have a lot of experience using humor, art, music, and movement in my classrooms. I have found that all of these ingredients make an English class with kids more successful.
