About the tutor

Hey! I'm May, and I love teaching people the intricacies of the weirdly wonderful language of English! I've spent my entire life translating for my parents and their friends, so I learned really young about the potential pitfalls to language acquisition. Since they were all from various parts of Asia, I also learned how to understand different accents and how to translate in a way that can best be understood by both parties. The point of communicating is to make sure there's no misunderstandings, so I always take into consideration the culture and expectations of my students when I'm guiding them toward English proficiency.

I am from New Orleans, USA so I love music, food and architecture. I travel as much as I can, so I love learning about new ways to see the world around us. I love animals and the outdoors so am always ready to discuss hiking, stargazing or relaxing in a hot spring. However, my favorite topic is connecting with my students and understanding what makes them tick. I love finding out why they are learning English and how they're accomplishing that goal. With my lifetime experience of translating and working in non-profit/NGOs and the corporate world, as well as my years in the classroom, I can help you with the nuances of the business world. Or get the score you need in the TOEFL or MAP tests. Or improve your pronunciation so you gain the confidence you need to speak to native English speakers. There is no subject too big or small to reach your goal of English fluency.

Like my title states, I grew up entrenched in dissecting English to my family and loved ones. Translating became second nature to me as it was my job wherever we went. Because of that, I've always had a love affair with English and linguistics in general.

So it made sense for me to devote my life to teaching formally when I moved to China. I ended up teaching at two schools with completely different methodologies. I did this so I could learn as much as possible about how to effectively teach people. My students were from the age of 6 months-88 years old. Thanks to my time there, I am able to quickly adapt my lessons to your level of comfort.

I am TOEFL/TESOL certified, and I love seeing my students get excited about our lesson. I cater my lessons around your interests and goals, so we can both light up while exploring into the American English world.

I do my best to make my sessions educational, informative and fun for both you and me.

Book a trial lesson with me so you can see for yourself how learning or perfecting English doesn't have to be a chore. It can be fun and one of the best experiences of your life. I can help open your eyes to the quirky world of Donald Ducks and Mickey Mice! Let's practice the sounds of English so you watch Game of Thrones or Friends and laugh along to their inside jokes for homework! Let's have you dreaming and speaking English in no time!

Specialties

  • Conversational English

Native speaker for 40+ years. Can help students break down the slang that many native speakers use! Some older native speakers are having a problem understanding the abbreviations of the youth, so I can guide you on how those words/phrases came to be.

  • Business English

I've been a business owner for the past 12 years and have been working since the age of 14. I can help you navigate "corporate speak" and help you draft emails/correspondences that will cover your butt and still enable you to get your work done. You will learn the vocabulary and nuances necessary for your field of expertise, whether that's legal, industrial, medical or corporate English. Let's translate that into English you will understand and become an expert in your field!

  • IELTS

During my time in China, most of my students were studying to move abroad. Because IELTS is the most popular English proficiency test, many needed my help to pass. So I spent a lot of my time assisting them in the specific areas they were struggling to succeed. I helped them figure out which test was appropriate for their goals, then focused our studies on their areas of weakness. Through our assessment sessions, my students were able to study, work or live in their chosen English-speaking countries with greater ease and a higher score.

  • English for work

My years of teaching and guiding my students allowed them to navigate their specific desires of English to enable them to communicate the most effectively in their newly adopted language. They were able to navigate the context of their instant interactions because I focus on nuance and relationship dynamics. They understood how they can be interpreted by the other side, especially if they are speaking to Americans or Westerners who are monolingual. I helped them bridge the gap between what they wanted to say and how they were speaking.

  • English for beginners

My years of teaching enable me to communicate in a manner that a 6-month-old can understand what I'm trying to say. I use my body and have props and tools to make sure my students leave my lessons heard and engaged.

  • American English

American English is full of slang and cultural context. I can help you understand what they're saying and how to get your meaning across without losing any "cool" points. The US is also a big country, so I can help you hear the various ways each region or city pronounces different words. I have traveled to over 40 states so can help you sound like the specific area(s) you want to visit/study/live.

  • Intensive English

Intensive English is basically my passion on overdrive. Instead of swimming in the shallow end of English learning in their home countries, I can help my students deep dive into the international waters of English 24/7. IEIS is what they'll experience once they go abroad, so I'm happy to hold their hands until they're ready to venture out on their own.
