About the tutor

Hello, I'm Ean! I live in Colorado, USA. I love teaching and learning languages as tools of empowerment and community. As an experienced English language educator and avid learner, I find joy and fulfillment in supporting students of all ages and needs in developing understanding, confidence, and competence. I believe in everyone's ability to learn, considering the billions of neurons in our brains, endless neural pathways, and many ways to grow our brains, including language learning.

I have native proficiency with the English language and both theoretical understandings and applied knowledge of how languages are learned, English language forms (syntax, grammar) and functions (semantics, meaning) across domains (reading, writing, speaking, listening), contexts/settings and purposes/registers. I've learned through undergraduate and graduate-level English, Teaching, and Linguistics coursework and research, as well as through teaching multiple ages and grades in English, writing/composition, and related courses and contents in a variety of learning environments.

In my experience, learning occurs in process when new words and ideas, or information connect to our experience in some way and are made relatable through meaningful engagement and clear purpose, explicitly taught through accessible representation or input, and then internalized through action or expression and repetition.

I respond to students' unique abilities, needs, and goals by balancing linguistically and cognitively appropriate instruction and feedback, and focused skill development through practice with relevant learning science and research-based best strategies in language development and executive functioning to ensure success with the learning process.

To achieve learning and language goals, it is helpful to understand the ways our motivation, physiological readiness, and our brain's ability to learn depend on a sense of safety in our nervous systems and social/learning environment. To me, this means prioritizing self-awareness, trust, and predictability as we learn together.

When I am not teaching and learning, I enjoy outdoor recreation (hiking, skiing, biking, etc.) with my partner, reading, cooking, caring for my cat and dog, hands-on projects, and travel.

In 10+ years of teaching and learning, I have tutored high school and undergraduate students, and taught primary, secondary, and adult English Language Arts, American Literature, English Language Development/English as a Second Language, and Special Education courses, both in classrooms and online. I have also gained experience working with teachers/instructors on curriculum and instructional practices as an Instructional Coach and Mentor Teacher.

I have experience teaching and tutoring beginner and developmental English through academic and professional English, with students/learners of many different primary languages and proficiency levels.

My formal/institutional education includes AP courses in secondary school, a Bachelor's degree in English Language & Literature and a Bachelor's degree in Education from Loyola University Chicago (Minors in English Education, English as a Second Language, Special Education, and International Baccalaureate), and Master's degree in Education from University of Colorado.

I'm a certified/licensed teacher in Colorado, endorsed in English Language Arts, Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education (ELD/ESL/TEFL/TESOL equivalent), and Special Education.

Let's meet your learning and language goals together! Develop understanding, confidence, and competence through engaging content and effective learning methods and strategies. Trust in your ability to learn and achieve success in a personalized and nurturing learning environment.
