Hello!

My name is Kohei. I have been teaching Japanese on Preply since 2019.

I was born and raised in Japan. I moved to the United States when I was 19 where I received my bachelor's and master's degrees. I am currently working on my Ph.D. in mathematics.

I will be happy to help students of all levels of Japanese.

With beginner students,

I usually use the textbook series called GENKI, from which we can study basic Japanese grammar. It has both textbooks and workbooks. I cover topics from the textbook in class and assign practice problems from the workbook as your homework. If you are a beginner, meeting twice a week is a good pace, but I know everyone is busy! So, we can work around your schedule.

With intermediate students,

We have various options to improve your Japanese skills. Many of my students have liked using the textbook series called Quartet (written by the author who wrote GENKI). It has many exciting readings and questions that prompt good discussion.

Once you are at intermediate levels (equivalent to having covered GENKI I and GENKI II), there are many good Japanese books you can try reading. You will find that there are often words and expressions that are not taught in the textbook but are used in real life. I believe it is a great way to improve your Japanese, and I will be very happy to help you.

With advanced students,

Our class will really depend on what skill you want to improve. I have helped students with pronunciation, writing, and listening. We could use advanced Japanese literature, news articles, documentaries, and TV series as our resources.

I can also help you prepare for JLPT, EJU, and MEXT (I can tutor the math section of EJU and MEXT both in Japanese and English). If you are interested in taking lessons with me, please send me a message!
